ABOUT US
Established 2008, LEAPS is a registered, non-profit animal welfare organisation.
We are dedicated to helping animals in need in the areas of Elands Bay, Lamberts Bay and Vredenburg, 220km up the West Coast from Cape Town.
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Mahatma Gandhi

WHO ARE WE?
LEAPS is a registered non profit animal welfare organisation addressing the needs of animals in the impoverished townships of Elands Bay, Lamberts Bay and Vredenburg, 220 kms up the West Coast from Cape Town. There is a population of approximately 8000 people in Vredenburg alone, with each household owning about 3 dogs.
Our team consists of 2 dedicated full time employees and a contingent of wonderful volunteers, most of whom have full-time jobs. We are entirely dependent on donations as we receive no funding from the local Municipalities or Government.

Our aim is to educate township pet owners to better care for their animals. We are constantly fundraising to assist with the medical needs of the animals, for spay/neuter campaigns, feeding programmes and the building of shelters for thousands of animals. Our closest vet to two of our townships is 90kms one-way and we often have to transport ill or injured pets utilising our own vehicles. We walk door to door to identify animals needing intervention and frequently administer assistance in the street.
To date, we have sterilised over 7500 animals, as well as assisting other surrounding towns with medical assistance and staffing for spayathons in their areas. We are also involved in education programmes for school children aimed at better caring for their pets.
LEAPS is dedicated to providing assistance and support to animals who require care and attention, such as those who are injured, abandoned or abused. Through our efforts, LEAPS seeks to promote the welfare of animals and to foster a more compassionate and humane society.
OUR TEAM
Our team consists of two dedicated full-time employees who are based on the West Coast in the rural communities that LEAPS serves. We also rely on the much-needed support of our dedicated volunteers who also have full-time jobs. One of our goals is to be able to afford to expand our team of employees.
